Series 64 scald protection valves: installation and inspection

Recommendations for installing PT Series 64 Scald Protection Valves and checking them before each summer season.

Installation notes

  • Install the Series 64 in a safe drainage area unaffected by any heat source (a steam tracer line, hot condensate sewer opening, etc.).
  • If stainless or copper tube is used to bring the valve to a safe location, use 1⁄2" tubing or larger.
  • Install the valve vertically downward with a “Y” strainer, with blow-down in front of the valve for dirt and particle retention.
  • Do not install a tail line on the outlet of the valve.

Inspection instructions

Perform this inspection 2–4 weeks before the summer season begins. It clears particles and dirt from the pipeline and confirms the Series 64 is working properly.

  1. Remove the Series 64 from the shower line and immerse the valve in a large bucket of water heated to between 105 °F and 110 °F.
  2. Lift the valve from the bucket: water should flow steadily from the valve's bottom outlet. If not, repeat step 1.
  3. Place the valve inlet under a running water faucet. The Series 64 should close tight in about 1–2 minutes.
  4. If the valve fails to open in step 2 or fails to close in step 3, replace it with a new valve.
  5. If the inspection is successful, blow down the strainer and shower line until the water runs clear, and reinstall the valve in the pipeline.
